How to become a car salesperson in Ontario

In Ontario, anyone who sells vehicles for a dealer must be registered with OMVIC first. Here is the path, with the costs and the official sources, as published by OMVIC and Georgian College.

Fees, steps and rules are set by the regulator and can change. Always confirm the current details with OMVIC (Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council) before you act.

The path, step by step

1

Take the Automotive Certification Course

The course is delivered by the Automotive Business School of Canada at Georgian College. It is self-study, with a printed manual and an online resource. The test is multiple choice, open-book with the printed manual, 90 minutes long, with an 80% pass mark. You can write it online with a proctor or in person, within 12 weeks of registering for the course.

2

Complete a background check

OMVIC requires a background check through its approved provider, BackCheck. OMVIC explains which check applies to you on its registration page.

3

Apply to OMVIC

Submit the individual salesperson application online with photo ID and proof that you can work in Canada. Your dealer responsible person signs your application. Passing the course does not register you by itself, and a pass is valid for 2 years to apply for registration.

4

Practise before your first customer

Getting registered gets you in the door. The first conversation is the real test. Forge lets you practise it out loud with a lifelike customer and get a coach-style scorecard. Your first session is free.
