Alberta guide

How to become a car salesperson in Alberta

In Alberta, every automotive salesperson must hold a valid registration with AMVIC. You cannot sell vehicles until you have passed the course and received it. Here is the path, with the costs and the official sources.

Fees, steps and rules are set by the regulator and can change. Always confirm the current details with AMVIC (Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council) before you act.

The path, step by step

1

Apply to AMVIC and pay the registration fee

Create an account on AMVIC Online and complete the salesperson application. You also need a Police Information Check at your own expense (most applicants use Backcheck), photo ID, and proof of eligibility to work in Canada if you are not a citizen.

2

Ask your employer to complete the Salesperson Authorization

It is part of the application. It links you to your employer in AMVIC records.

3

Pass the Salesperson Registration Course

The course is online and the final exam has an 80% pass mark. You can take it before you find a job. You have 30 days from submitting your application and paying to finish everything, including the course, or the application is refused and you reapply.

4

Practise before your first customer

Getting registered gets you in the door. The first conversation is the real test. Forge lets you practise it out loud with a lifelike customer and get a coach-style scorecard. Your first session is free.
